Albert Spalding

Albert Goodwill Spalding was already emerging as one of baseball’s earliest stars in 1871, the year he made his professional debut. Born in 1850 in Byron, Illinois, Spalding had dominated amateur baseball with the Rockford Forest City before joining Harry Wright’s newly formed Boston Red Stockings in the National Association of Professional Baseball Players. In 1871, his first professional season, he posted a 19–10 record and immediately established himself as one of the league’s top pitchers.

Born Denton True Young on an Ohio farm, he earned his famous nickname "Cy" after a scout remarked that his blistering fastball destroyed grandstand fences like a "cyclone." He debuted with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890, rapidly dominating the league by winning 36 games with a 1.93 ERA by his third season.
